Antioxidant Activity and Phenolic Composition of Extracts Obtained from Microalgae After the Application of Innovative Processes

Francisco Juan Martí-QuijalDr. Francisco Juan Martí-Quijal, from the University of Valencia, Spain, will join us this year to present a talk entitled “Antioxidant Activity and Phenolic Composition of Extracts Obtained from Microalgae After the Application of Innovative Processes”.

Microalgae are an important source of nutrients and bioactive compounds (e.g. polyphenols), and therefore can be considered as interesting ingredients in the development of new functional foods and nutraceutical products. Different extraction methods can be used to obtain microalgae compounds with high added value. In this sense, non-conventional extraction technologies like pulsed electric fields, supercritical fluids extraction, and enzymatic extraction, among others, can be useful to make this process more sustainable since conventional extraction methods can be slow, consume large amounts of solvent, work at high temperatures, or extract unwanted compounds. Treatment and extraction conditions can influence the phenolic profile and antioxidant activity of the obtained extracts.
