Valorization of agri-food by-products by extracting valuable bioactive compounds using green processes

Krasimir Dimitrov Polyphenols congress

Dr Krasimir Dimitrov, from the Charles Violette Institute at Lille University, France is invited during Vienna Polyphenols World Congress to give a talk about the valorization of agri-food by-products by extracting  valuable bioactive compounds using green processes.

During his presentation, Dr Dimitrov will highlight the main green extraction processes applied for recovery of bioactive compounds from agri-food by-products, such as
enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) are presented, as well as some processes, such as pulsed electric fields (PEF) and high voltage electrical discharges (HVED) that could be applied both in pretreatment stage and during the extraction process.

Another pretreatment process, instant controlled pressure drop (DIC process), allowing to enhance considerably the extraction process is also described. For each process, will be discribed the principle and some examples of its application for recovery of valuable bio-molecules (mainly polyphenols) from agri-food by-products. The green impact of each process is related to the “6 principles of the green extraction”.

Finally, some examples of simultaneous application of at least two processes (hybrid extraction processes) and process integration allowing to enhance the extraction yields and to obtain enriched natural extracts at reduced time and energy (integrated processes)will be presented.
