Natural polyphenol supplements reduce dietary iron absorption in adults with iron-loading diseases

Michael ZimmermannProf. Michael Bruce Zimmermann, ETH Zurich, Switzerland, will join the Polyphenols Applications 2023 Congress and present his latest rearch about the "Natural polyphenol supplements reduce dietary iron absorption in adults with iron-loading diseases".

Dr. Zimmermann and his colleagues developed a new natural polyphenol supplement that strongly chelates iron in vitro and assessed its effect on non-heme iron absorption in patients with hereditary hemochromatosis (HH). The polyphenol supplement reduced iron absorption by ~ 40% from meals and test drinks.

Their results indicate that when taken with meals, this natural polyphenol supplement can decrease dietary iron absorption, and might thereby reduce toxicity of body iron accumulation in patients with HH.
