Looking Beyond Composition: The Gut Microbiome's Capacity to Metabolize Dietary Polyphenols.
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Stephanie Wilson from the University of California, Davis, USA, will join Polyphenols Applications 2026 and give a presentation entitled Looking Beyond Composition: The Gut Microbiome's Capacity to Metabolize Dietary Polyphenols.
Many dietary polyphenols escape absorption in the small intestine and reach the large intestine, where they interact extensively with the gut microbiome. In turn, gut microbes transform polyphenols into a wide range of metabolites that may contribute to their health effects. However, it is unclear how diet relates to the gut microbiome's capacity to metabolize these compounds. In this talk, we will present findings from our study of 313 healthy adults in the United States, in which we combined dietary recalls with fecal metagenomic sequencing to examine associations between polyphenol intake and microbial polyphenol utilization genes. We found that individuals who consumed more diverse dietary polyphenols had a greater abundance and diversity of microbial genes involved in polyphenol utilization, as well as a higher abundance of microbes carrying these genes. Our findings suggest that consuming a diverse, polyphenol-rich diet may help shape the gut microbiome's functional capacity to metabolize polyphenols.
